“The century-old pit that started Memphis barbecue”
Leonard's is the oldest name in Memphis barbecue, a lineage that traces to 1922, when founder Leonard Heuberger traded a Model T for a seven-stool sandwich stand. This Fox Plaza location carries that century of history forward, a working pit rather than a museum, where the original Memphis pork sandwich is still assembled to spec. The menu holds the founding recipe close: pit-cooked pork shoulder smoked whole, a tangy tomato-based sauce, and the chopped pork sandwich credited as the city's first, shoulder and slaw stacked on a bun. Rib plates and the full barbecue platter fill out a tray that would be recognizable to a diner from a hundred years ago. Eating here is a walk through the origin of an entire regional style, served without ceremony over a lunch counter that has never needed to reinvent itself.

Leonard's BBQ serves Memphis Style barbecue — Memphis BBQ is rib country. The great debate is wet vs. dry: dry ribs are coated in a paprika-heavy spice rub and served without sauce, while wet ribs are glazed with a tomato-vinegar based sauce. Memphis also claims BBQ spaghetti and the BBQ nachos.
